Last weekend’s storm pushed several events to this week, and the most anticipated of them is Uptown Sound Music Festival, which makes its rescheduled return to Anderson Park on Saturday, October 3, 2 to 8 p.m., free, with the full original lineup: Rocking for Inclusion, El Ritmo, The Bard Band, and headliner Waterbury Road. Beyond that, Chow Town is running its popular Montclair food tour Saturday afternoon, an LGBT picnic heads to South Mountain, and an engineering softball tournament takes over Brookdale Park. There’s also a food truck festival Friday night just over the Nutley line and live music at Montclair Brewery to kick things off. Here’s what’s worth your time October 2 through 4.
The Jist at Montclair Brewery
Friday, October 2, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. | Montclair Brewery, 101 Walnut St. | $5 cover
The Jist, an eight-piece New Jersey party band built around funk, rock and soul, plays Montclair Brewery on Friday night. The group brings a horn section, Latin percussion and a set that mixes crowd favorites with originals, all at a pace designed to keep the dance floor moving. The $5 cover goes directly to the artists.
St. Mary’s Food Truck Festival in Nutley
Friday, October 2, 4 to 9 p.m. | 17 Monsignor Owens Place, Nutley | $5 at the gate; $3 seniors; free under 10
JC Promotions and St. Mary’s Church host a fall food truck festival Friday evening in Nutley, with gourmet food trucks, a beer garden, live music, a kids’ area with bounce houses and face painters, and exhibitor vendors. Table seating provided; lawn chairs welcome. A good Friday night option that won’t cost much at the door.
Montclair Food Tour with Chow Town
Saturday, October 3, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. | Walnut Street, Montclair | Tickets required, ages 18+
Chow Town’s Montclair In Motion food tour covers the Walnut Street corridor on Saturday afternoon, stopping at Neapolitan pizza, award-winning donuts, a multicultural bakery in a former jazz club, the Montclair Farmer’s Market and more along the way. Afternoon Picnic at South Mountain with Out & Active
Saturday, October 3, 2 to 4 p.m. | Turtle Back Rock Picnic Area, 374 Walker Road, West Orange | Free, RSVP on Meetup
Out & Active, the North Jersey LGBT Meetup group, heads to South Mountain Reservation for a potluck picnic Saturday afternoon. Bring a snack to share, something to sit on and come as you are. Dogs and kids are welcome. After 4 p.m., anyone who wants to can join an optional 30-minute to one-hour easy hike starting from the picnic area. RSVP through Meetup so organizers know how much food to expect.
ASCE Engineering Softball Tournament at Brookdale Park
Saturday, October 3, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. | Brookdale Park Baseball Fields, 20 Bellevue Ave., Bloomfield | Free to watch
The American Society of Civil Engineers North Jersey Branch holds its annual engineering softball tournament at Brookdale Park on Saturday, with teams playing three games each followed by a single-elimination playoff round.
