The new meter is free. That’s the first thing to know if a Montclair water meter replacement notice lands in your mailbox this fall. The appointment takes about half an hour, and someone has to be home to let the installer in.
Not every home is on the list though. The Montclair Water Bureau posted a notice on Oct. 15 saying that MeterTek Utility Services, the contractor the township authorized for the work, will contact residents whose meters are due for replacement. The township says the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, the state agency that oversees utility service, requires the replacements.
The township’s notice puts the cost in one line: “There is no cost to residents for this service.”
Before you let anyone in, ask for ID. MeterTek representatives carry company identification, according to the township. If no one is home, they may leave a notice with scheduling instructions.
