Montclair Police Blotter: Dog Left Tied to a Garbage Bin on Orange Road

Camila Gonzalez October 21, 2026

Someone tied a dog to a garbage bin in the South End Business District on the night of October 13 and walked away, and Montclair police are asking anyone with information to call the Detective Bureau. The animal cruelty investigation leads this week’s Montclair police blotter, which covers October 13 through October 20 and also includes the recovery of a Hyundai stolen from Walnut Street last week, a cut bike lock at Bloomfield Avenue and Pine Street and a large hygiene products theft at CVS.

Dog tied to a garbage bin on Orange Road: what police know

Surveillance footage in the area shows a man get out of a vehicle, possibly a Dodge Durango, with the dog. The vehicle then traveled south on Orange Road. At 8:45 p.m., the man tied the dog to a garbage bin. He entered a store at 8:46 p.m. and left on foot at 8:49 p.m., heading north on Orange Road, without the dog.

Police describe the dog as black with a white underbelly. Animal Control responded to the scene and took custody of the dog. The blotter does not say where the dog is now or what condition it was in.

Stolen Hyundai from Walnut Street recovered after foot chase on Maple Avenue

Last week’s blotter reported a 2026 Hyundai stolen from Walnut Street on October 12, after its owner told police she had left it unlocked with the keys inside. On October 13, the New Jersey State Police Auto Crimes Task Force told Montclair police it was following that car. The Hyundai traveled south on Maple Avenue, and two men jumped out at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Lexington Avenue. After a short foot chase, both were arrested and turned over to State Police. They are residents of Paterson and Newark, according to the blotter.

The car was recovered one day after it was reported stolen.

Montclair theft reports: a cut bike lock and two bags of hygiene products at CVS

A cyclist locked his olive green REI Co-op bicycle to a street sign on the northwest corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Pine Street at about 7:45 a.m. on October 14. When he came back at about 2:15 p.m., the lock had been cut and the bike and his helmet were gone. The bike was valued at about $650.

Employees at the CVS on Claremont Avenue told police a man came in on October 15 and began taking hygiene products. Management could not list what was taken, only that it filled about two shopping bags. Employees last saw him running west on Claremont Avenue toward Grove Street.
