July 4, 2026 isn’t just any Fourth of July. This year marks America’s 250th birthday, the Semiquincentennial, and the greater Montclair area is showing up for it in a big way. There’s a parade winding through town, fireworks popping off across Essex County on basically every night of the holiday week, and, because it’s 2026 and the World Cup is happening 12 miles away, you can also watch Round of 16 knockout soccer for free at Lackawanna Station after the picnic wraps up.
We’ve rounded up everything you need to know: what’s in Montclair, what’s nearby, how to get there, and yes, where to park. Check our events calendar for the latest additions, and keep reading for the full breakdown.

The annual Montclair Fourth of July parade is the real deal: marching bands, floats, local civic groups, food trucks, games, live music, and the kind of chaotic, joyful community energy that makes you remember why you moved here.
The parade route runs 1.6 miles: west on Bloomfield Avenue, north on Midland Avenue, continuing to Watchung Avenue, west on Valley Road, ending at Edgemont Memorial Park. It runs rain or shine.
The festival at Edgemont Park kicks off at 1 p.m. with food trucks, live music and kids’ activities.
This year’s extra significance
The Montclair History Center is serving as grand marshal alongside Friends of the Howe House and The Mark Montclair, as part of the N.J. Black Heritage Trail. The parade traces back to the early 1950s, making it one of the township’s longest-running annual events.
Residents who have been here for decades continue to show up year after year; the July 4 parade is one of those events that draws people out of their houses and reminds everyone that this is a town, not just a zip code.
Last year’s July 3, 2025 episode paired the holiday with an interview with then-new Superintendent Ruth Turner, because only in Montclair do you get a school policy deep dive and Fourth of July logistics in the same episode.
Date: July 4 and 5, and all summer through July 19 · Location: Lackawanna Station, 1 Lackawanna Plaza, Montclair · Cost: Free
Here’s something that would not have been true in any previous July 4 of your lifetime: after the parade and picnic, you can walk over to Lackawanna Station and watch a World Cup Round of 16 match on a giant screen for free.
Lackawanna Station has been running Summer of Soccer, a free, 39-day World Cup festival, since June 11. The Big Room fills up for every match with themed food and drinks, live music, and what organizers describe as a cultural experience as much as a viewing party, built around the idea that soccer is not just a game in Montclair but a reflection of the town itself.
What’s on the big screen over July 4th weekend
All specific matchups will be determined by Round of 32 results. All times ET, all free at Lackawanna.
July 4th parade in the morning, picnic in the afternoon, World Cup Round of 16 at Lackawanna in the evening. That is a full day in Montclair. Check the full Summer of Soccer calendar at summerofsoccermontclairnj.com for watch party themes and any additional events over the weekend.

Closest: Brookdale Park, July 1
This is the one. Brookdale Park sits literally on the Montclair/Bloomfield border, it’s free, and it’s three days before the holiday, which means you can do both fireworks here on July 1 and the parade on July 4. The Essex County Free Summer Music Concert Series kicks off with a fireworks extravaganza and Music Through the Decades featuring Van Martin, The Discoteks and The Empire. Pack a blanket and head to the meadow on the south (Watchung Avenue) side of the park.
Parking tip: Use the East Circuit Drive lot off Watchung Avenue for the most direct shot to the meadow. Montclair residents can also enter via West Circuit Drive off Grove Street.
Bloomfield: Foley Field, July 4
Montclair’s closest actual July 4 fireworks option, and it’s a full production. Food vendors, kids’ amusements, an awards ceremony and a live performance by The Infernos before the fireworks go off around 9:25 p.m.
Verona: Liberty Field, July 1
Verona is leaning all the way into America’s 250th, with a Betsy Ross portrayer leading a flag-making activity, a DJ and dancing, and fireworks at approximately 9 p.m. Great option on July 1 if you want to combine it with Brookdale and cover both sides of the county. Parking is limited; plan accordingly or use a rideshare. For those with sensory sensitivities, Verona recommends arriving early to enjoy activities before the fireworks start.
Cedar Grove: Panther Park, July 2
The reliable neighborhood option. Gates at 7, fireworks at dusk. Easy and low-key.
Millburn/Short Hills: Millburn High School, July 4
One of the best all-day options in the region. Starts early with a flag-raising event and the annual Patriot Award ceremony, followed by a magician, kids’ DJ party, face painting and stilt walkers, then Scream Truck and Jersey Jonny’s Grill for dinner, and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. If you have little kids, this is worth the drive.
West Caldwell: James Caldwell High School, July 4
Live music, a bike decorating contest, food trucks and fireworks at dark.
Livingston: Memorial Oval, July 4
Livingston’s 89th annual celebration. All day, all the things: rides, food trucks, vendors, a beer and wine garden starting at 3:30 p.m., live music, capped with fireworks at 9:15.
Belleville: July 3 head start
A solid option if you want to get your fireworks in a night early and keep July 4 itself more relaxed. Games, food trucks, music, face painting and fireworks at dusk.
Nutley: Park Oval, July 4
Nutley’s annual celebration at the Park Oval. Family-friendly evening with fireworks to follow at dusk.

About that parking: it’s real. Essex County events draw big crowds under normal circumstances. This year, with America’s 250th and the World Cup in the region simultaneously, things will be busier than usual. Plan ahead, use NJ Transit where you can, and don’t be the person who circles for 45 minutes and misses the fireworks.
Two hundred and fifty years. The Semiquincentennial is a genuine milestone, and communities across Essex County are treating it as such. Verona is bringing in historical reenactors. The Montclair History Center is marching as grand marshal, spotlighting the town’s place in the N.J. Black Heritage Trail. Essex County is anchoring its holiday week with concerts and fireworks. And for the first time, the World Cup Round of 16 and America’s 250th are happening on the same weekend, both practically in our backyard.
In other words: it’s a lot. See you on Bloomfield Avenue.
