Sold Out, Circling the Deck or Just Curious: A Montclair Film Festival Guide

Camila Gonzalez October 21, 2026

The 15th Montclair Film Festival runs October 16 through 25. This Montclair Film Festival guide covers how tickets and standby lines work, where to park at each venue and which events cost nothing. It’s for anyone trying to get into a film that sold out during member presale or circling for a spot near MKA Upper School at 7:15 p.m. For what’s actually screening, start with our full 2026 lineup.

How Montclair Film Festival Tickets Work

Most screenings cost $20, or $17 for Montclair Film members, and every sale is final. Montclair Film’s ticket policy allows no refunds and no exchanges.

Each film’s ticket page shows its price tier. Matinees, which the festival defines as weekday films before 5 p.m., cost $15, or $13 for members. Spotlight films and events cost $25 or $20. Premier events cost $50 or $40. That top tier includes the hottest tickets of the week, such as “The Debut” with Jesse Eisenberg, Paul Giamatti and Julianne Moore in conversation with Stephen Colbert.

The new 10-pack saves money only if you spend it on standard films. It costs $180, or $150 for members, and it covers standard and matinee films only. Ten standard tickets at $20 come to $200, so the pack saves you $20. Ten matinees at $15 come to $150, so the pack costs you $30 more than buying them one at a time. The pack also doesn’t guarantee a seat.

Only The Wellmont Theater sells reserved seats. Every other venue runs open seating, meaning first come, first seated, and Montclair Film recommends arriving 30 minutes before showtime. For in-person sales, the main box office inside the Hinck Building at 486 Bloomfield Ave. opens from noon to 7 p.m. daily through October 25. Venue box offices open 30 minutes before each venue’s first screening of the day.

Tom Hall, Montclair Film’s artistic director and co-head, gave the Pod his ticket advice when sales opened. “Get ready to pivot,” he told Farnoosh Torabi. “Because we’re already seeing a lot of films, all the high-impact movies that you think are gonna sell out are gonna sell out, right? The celebrity-driven stuff is always a thing.”

When the pivot fails, there is still the standby line.

Sold Out? How the Montclair Film Festival Standby Line Works

Sold out doesn’t always mean full. Montclair Film runs a standby line, a first-come, first-served line for people without tickets, at every sold-out show. The line forms 30 minutes before showtime, and the festival releases unclaimed seats to it five minutes before the film starts.

Those seats belong to ticket holders who arrive late. Montclair Film guarantees a seat only to ticket holders who arrive at least 10 minutes before showtime, and it hands any empty seats to the standby line after that. Bring cash, because standby sales are cash only and charge non-member prices.

The Wellmont runs no standby line, so a sold-out Wellmont show stays sold out. That covers opening night, Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine,” on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.; “Ray Gunn,” the festival’s featured animated film, on Oct. 17; and “Kill. Bury. Print.,” the Rachel Maddow-produced documentary that screens Oct. 17 at 8 p.m.

Standby matters most at MKA Upper School, 6 Lloyd Road, which hosts several of the festival’s biggest nights in a much smaller room. MKA hosts:

  • “Elsinore,” the festival’s featured fiction film, on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
  • “14th,” Ava DuVernay’s documentary, followed by DuVernay and Colbert in conversation, on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
  • “The Debut” on Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
  • “Behemoth!,” the closing film, on Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.

A Montclair film Meetup group reported that “Elsinore” and “The Debut” both went to standby only during member presale.

If you plan to try your luck with “The Debut,” get in line with cash at 7 p.m., not 7:25. That means parking by 6:45, which brings us to the next problem.

Where to Park for the Montclair Film Festival

For the downtown venues, Montclair Film points festivalgoers to the Crescent Parking Deck at 13 The Crescent and the Midtown Parking Deck at 202 Glenridge Ave., plus the North Fullerton Parking Deck for the Clairidge. The Clairidge and the Audible Lounge at Montclair Mezzanine, the festival’s talk and panel space, share the Hinck Building at 486 Bloomfield Ave. The Wellmont sits a short walk away at 5 Seymour St.

Street parkers need to pay the meter until 10 p.m. Montclair Film’s venue page says downtown meters run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., so skipping the meter for a 7:30 p.m. show risks a ticket. Every meter takes ParkMobile, the township’s parking payment app.

In Upper Montclair, the Bellevue at 260 Bellevue Ave. relies on street parking along Bellevue Avenue and Valley Road, plus the Bellevue Plaza and Montclair Plaza lots, all payable through ParkMobile. At MKA Upper School, Montclair Film describes parking as limited, with spaces behind the school and along Lloyd Road. For the big MKA nights, get dropped off if you can.

The train skips the parking problem at two venues. The Clairidge sits a six-minute walk from Bay Street Station, and NJ Transit’s 28 and 29 buses stop about a minute away. The Bellevue is close to Upper Montclair Station on the Montclair-Boonton Line, and the 101 bus stops at Bellevue Plaza.

Once you’re there, there are still three venue rules to keep in mind. The Wellmont bans backpacks of any kind and offers no bag check. MKA allows no food or drink in its theater under school policy. At the Bellevue, theaters 2 and 3 sit upstairs with no elevator, but every film plays in the accessible Theater 1 at least once a day, so anyone who can’t manage stairs should buy that showing.

Free Things to Do at the Montclair Film Festival

Events at the Audible Lounge cost nothing unless a listing says otherwise, and Montclair Film welcomes donations. Most of the festival’s panels and talks happen there. Highlights include “Art Can Save Our Democracy” on Oct. 19, a panel with leaders from the Montclair Art Museum, Jazz House Kids, Vanguard Theater Group and Montclair Film, and “Breaking Into the Business,” a guide to New Jersey’s film and TV industry, on Oct. 22. Free doesn’t mean walk-in, though. The festival requires advance tickets for every screening and event, so reserve a free ticket before you go.

The biggest free day comes Saturday, Oct. 24, when Montclair Film and Montclair Complete Streets close Church Street to traffic for a silent disco, a free outdoor screening and family activities. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 25. Check the Church Street page for the schedule before you head down.

The festival pin turns any ticket into local discounts. Montclair Film hands out pins as people leave any screening, and partner businesses offer deals to anyone who shows one. A few worth the detour:

  • OddFellows, 450 Bloomfield Ave.: one free topping, a short walk from the Clairidge.
  • Montclair Brewery, 101 Walnut St.: 10% off all drinks through Oct. 30.
  • Sam’s Table, 377 Bloomfield Ave.: 5% off dinner through Nov. 1 with a pin or festival ticket. The restaurant recommends reservations.
  • Java Love Coffee Roasting Co., 49 Church St., 39 Glenridge Ave. and 244 Bellevue Ave.: 10% off with a movie ticket, Oct. 16 through 25, at the downtown and Upper Montclair shops.
  • Dan & Day’s Burgers and Shakes, 598 Valley Road: 10% off, close to the Bellevue.
  • East Side Mags, 491 Bloomfield Ave.: 15% off your next in-store purchase through Nov. 5, with some exclusions.
  • Montclair Book Center, 221 Glenridge Ave.: $5 off Haunted House tickets at the door, Oct. 23 through 25.
